Orphans in Ukraine.

I often hear how people say,
- I feel sorry for orphans, but I do not know how I can help.
- 100 000 orphans in Ukraine is sad, but I think that businesspersons are the ones who should help them, etc.

Orphans need our help and anyone can do it. But another question is: how to help correctly? Helping to no harm.

To begin with harmful help:

Stereotypical image of orphan - sad child with big eyes filled with tears, left by all. And of course, each feel strong desire to comfort him, cheer, bring a bunch of sweets, gifts. And those willing to help come to orphanages to make a party there. Children rejoice, dance, sing, and share candies and toys. It seems everyone is having fun. What next? Children again are waiting for the arrival of "fun sponsors" and get used to these regular parties.

There is an unofficial statistics - a child in an orphanage receives 100 events a year, and the child from usual family - 10-15.

Next about useful help:

The need to have a family, father and mother is one of the greatest needs of a child. Therefore, the best care for children is to prevent them falling into an orphanage, to support the family in difficult times. If there is no possibility to return the child to the biological family, the adoption, creation of family-type homes, foster care, guardianship or care - all of these forms of education are able to bring back him a childhood.

To better understand how we can help an orphan who nevertheless got into an orphanage, we need to look at its graduates and their destiny. One of the main problems of boarding school’s graduates is the inadaptability for independent life. The terrible statistics - 40% of orphans become victims of fraud, 40% go to the path of crime, 10% commit suicide and only 10% become full members of society. Why so? Studies show the following socio-psychological characteristics of boarding school’s graduates:

· Inability to fill their free time with leisure

· Inability to spend money efficiently

· Poor self-control and self-discipline

· Limited horizons.

And this is primarily a consequence of the lack of adult friend who can share his experience, guide, and help socialize, support in school studies.

So, you can help in several ways: personal participation in the life of an orphan (personal care), work in the volunteer group or provide material support for educational, social or internship programs.
